Quality Teak Furniture

Quality teak furniture is made with quality teak woods.  Grading teak wood is an important process in ensuring the quality of the finished product.  Not all sections of wood are created equal and so it is necessary to make sure that the sections of teak wood that are selected for furniture making are the right ones.

Selecting the Best Teak Wood

Grading teak lumber for furniture making is about judging how many boards you can get without defects. Better grade boards generally have fewer defects and thus tend to cost more. If you are interested in learning more about the process of selecting teak hardwood, you might visit the National Hardwood Lumber Association.

Drying The Teak Lumber

Teak wood is considered water laden when it is cut.  When teak is properly kiln dried, the moisture content is reduced at an even rate. If parts of a piece of word were to dry more quickly than other parts, splitting could occur.

Our Teak Furniture Construction

The teak wood used in the manufacture of our teak furniture has been kiln dried and cut by machine and by hand to ensure a proper fit. The pieces then are joined primarily by mortise or by wooden dowel pegs and in many cases are bonded with adhesive. Screws are specially placed where the design has requires it.

Why Teak Furniture Is Durable

Teak hardwood is extremely dense and does not warp or rot or soak up water readily like many other types of woods. It is also a wood that can be left exposed to the elements without rotting out, which is why teak is so desirable for outdoor furniture use.

Protected Teak Woods

Teak may be one of the best protected species in the world according to the USDA Foreign Agricultural Service and has largely been sought as a renewable resource through plantation growth. Teak is native to Southeast Asia and although the older more mature trees are harder, the plantation grown teak is more affordable and probably ethical to purchase.  Plantation grown teak trees have a lower yield and are may have a girdth of less than two feet and a height of

Although teak is not a rainforest wood, its consumption has raised various environmental concerns.  The depletion of mature natural grown teak trees has led to a major push for sustainable and renewable programs and other protective programs throughout various endangered regions.
